Chapter 16

Sophia paled when I said her name. She grabbed her son from Pasha's arms and backed away, her brown eyes wide. "Who is she?" She bent and snatched a gardening trowel from the grass and pointed it at me. The dying sun reflected off the wobbling silver tip. "Why did you bring her?"

I stared at her, so shocked that I forgot about the throbbing pain in my arm for a moment. "Pasha?" I whispered, my throat dry.

Pasha touched her wrist and gently pushed the trowel down. "It's alright, Gabs," he said, He looked back at me, a small smile creasing his cheek. "This is my wife, Mia."

"Wife?" Sophia whispered, and her lovely red lips parted in dismay.

"Gabs?" I repeated.

"Mia, this is Sophia and Benjamin Yates," Pasha gestured for me to come closer. "Gabs is a code name for her."

I cocked my head, trying to wrap my head around this strange turn of events.

"I had a stillborn daughter named Gabriella," Sophia said, looking up at Pasha with wide, longing eyes. "Her name was the only part of my old life that Pasha said I could keep."

"But..." I pointed from her to Benjamin. "But you're dead. I saw the newspaper articles, the files..." my finger moved to Pasha. "You killed them."

He sighed and reached out for my hand. His fingers only brushed over mine before he restrained himself. "Let's get out of the open," he said. Benjamin reached for him, and Pasha took him in his arms again.

Sophia led the way into the candy-colored house. The inside was just as cheery, with flowers on every flat surface and pictures of Sophia and Benjamin dotting the walls. Pasha set Benjamin down, and the boy immediately ran off, telling his "uncle" to wait while he grabbed his new toys.

"Somebody better start explaining," I snapped as soon as the child was out of earshot, splaying my hands on the polished granite counter, "or I'm going to start screaming."

"Nice girl," Sophia said to Pasha. She rolled her eyes as she pulled a glass vase of lemonade from the fridge. "Wherever did you pick her up?"

"You said you'd never lied to me," I said to my so-called husband. To my surprise, a lump formed in the back of my throat. "You let me believe that you actually—" I choked on the words and pressed the back of my wrist to my nose. "I thought you killed an innocent child. Do you know what that's been doing to me the past two days?"

Pasha's brows wrinkled, and he finally wrapped his hands around my waist, pulling me close. "Like I said, there are many things I've never told you, but I have never lied to you."

"But when I asked you if you killed all those people—" my voice broke, and I looked down.

"You said you wouldn't believe me if I said no. So I just let you think what was easiest for you." His fingers brushed the tangled hair from my face and lifted my chin. He looked at me, his puppy-dog eyes begging for me to understand.
